On the next page is a new melee resolution table for the La Bataille game series. This table is essentially the same as the official, published chart but has been "cleaned up" so that the progression of events is more linear. The original chart's non-linear results order often resulted in a good leader's bonus acting as a penalty, or a doofus leader's penalty acting as a bonus. I've playtested this new chart in a game and it seemed to work better, and produced a lot less frustration between the players, than the old chart. Try it out and let me know what you think of it. The rationale for resetting the chart was as follows: First, write down all the nasty things that can happen to the attacker with no result on the defender, in decreasing order of nastiness. Then, write down all the null results. Then, write down all the results that are nasty to the defender, in increasing order of nastiness; where there are results of equal nastiness to the defender, write the results which are more nasty to the attacker first. Any result which included an automatic disorder or rout was judged as more nasty than a result of only increment losses, regardless of the number of those losses.
