Peter Bogdasarian - Jan 10, 2007 10:58 am (#78 Total: 141) The good news is that our bolt action rifles are more accurate than their machineguns. 2 questions. 1. If you pillage a square, you'll reduce its forage rating to 0. Because provisioning takes place before movement, you'll need a gold in hand to pay for those forces or they'll all be eliminated on your next turn, correct? Makes pillaging rather hazardous, which seems a mite bizarre. One doesn't normally hear of Viking raiders starving to death after a successful raid. 2. If a Viking fleet exits Norway (5 mp), can it stop on the coast of Norway or must it proceed into the ocean? If the Vikings have to cross the ocean, they're essentially stuck at home until the player draws a gold marker... Joseph Miranda - Jan 11, 2007 1:28 pm (#79 Total: 141) >1. Units which pillage a square are in supply in the turn following. Presumably, they would be eating all the food they seized, or have drunken all the grog and not care! >Makes pillaging rather hazardous, which seems a mite bizarre. One doesn't normally hear of Viking raiders starving to death after a successful raid. This is because they had the "stomach" for pillaging. >2. If a Viking fleet exits Norway (5 mp), can it stop on the coast of Norway or must it proceed into the ocean? It can stop, but with a movement of 15 the Viking fleets should be able to reach Britain. Bob Kasabian - Jan 21, 2007 3:38 pm (#87 Total: 141) Joe/Ty, four of us plan to play this Wednesday eve. The rules are pretty clear, and I just have two questions: Rule 19.7 states "a square once pillaged is pillaged for the remainder of the game," but the Recruiting Table lists "Remove a Pillage Marker". Which is correct? Also, what is a "Beserker"? (listed in the errata - post #26) Joseph Miranda - Jan 21, 2007 11:35 pm (#88 Total: 141) >Rule 19.7 states "a square once pillaged is pillaged for the remainder of the game," but the Recruiting Table lists "Remove a Pillage Marker". Which is correct? i.e., the pillage marker does not remove itself. You have to pay to remove it. Also, what is a "Beserker"? (listed in the errata - post #26) The Viking unit marked "Berserker". These were Vikings who ran amok on the battlefield. They wore bear shirts and from the Norse words for "bear shirt" we get "berserker". >Joe/Ty, four of us plan to play this Wednesday eve. Please post an AAR. Joseph Miranda - Feb 4, 2007 5:35 pm (#119 Total: 120) 1066 Q & A >and once you draw Tostig from the pool, he will never change sides again. correct? Correct. Tostig is a unit which is placed in the Pool and received as a reinforcement, in effect, when picked. >Would it improve this aspect of the game, making it less arbitrary, if you could use Gold markers to modify your die roll? This sounds like the basis for a good variant article in Fire & Movement magazine. Gin up some rules and submit them to Jon Compton, the F&M editor. >If there is no chance to make pillaged squares recover then isn't a no winner situation at game end quite likely (or a Briton if using the optional added rule)? Don't forget, when you pillage, the other players get free campaign markers. So if you push this too much, the other players will get a big advantage. Also, if one player is running amok in this manner, it behooves the other players to combine to defeat him. Rather than discuss hypoheticals, has anyone tried this strategy? >Does the forage value of a town square include the value of the background terrain type? For example, is Winchester 3 (feudal value +1) or 6 (feudal value + 1, + 3 for clear terrain)? No. By the way, it should be the feudal value of the town +2 (errata), not +1. >Can you pillage your own off-map box (thats an awful lot of campaign markers...)? No. The rule states "squares". >An earlier post said that the Normans control 22 victory points at start. I can only count 12. I am assuming that 23.2 "pillaged squares and off-map areas count as zero" means that you don't get victory points for off-map areas. Or is it meant to be understood as "pillaged squares and pillaged off-map areas count as zero"? You can not pillage off-map areas. Normans have 12 points at the start (not counting the Normandy off map area). >One facet of the three player game which we found strange was the assignment of the Britons when their neutrality is violated. The Anglo-Saxons decided to attack Edinburgh, and the Normans won the die roll. It seems a bit arbitrary, for the already strong Normans now have the Britons as allies. The alternative would be to have complex proceudres for every last game function which would cause the game to sink of its own weight. This is the Dark Ages, let's keep it simple. Thanks for playing.
