Philipp Klarmann - 12:20pm Sep 14, 1999 PST (#49 of 55) Member of the GHS e.V. - the German wargaming society Hi, can nobody comment on Mike Hayman´s questions? I get the game in two days and want to play it :). Philipp -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alan Moorhouse - 04:41am Sep 22, 1999 PST (#52 of 55) Moorcon 23-26th Sept Basingstoke UK - last chance to sign up! - email me. My interpretation of the rules are (personal opinion). Makhno: What are his northern limits for operations? Why should there be any? What are the Ukrainian eastern limits for definition of outside the national's country for armt rolls? I would say the Dnepr river line, you are definitely in enemy territory there. Can Makhno take and accumulate PR's The is no PR counter and the HQ cant be replaced. I'd say it cannot use PRs (i.e. like the Czechs) What is to prevent suicidal deployments of Makhno by either side when they have control of him? We played that Makhno could not be attacked by the side controlling him, but this did not prevent intentionally stupid deployments by the controller before turns where Makhno might switch sides. As far as I can see, Makhno should be used to get in the way of your opponents troops. Other than leaving the HQ miles from its troops, its difficult to imagine a stupid deployment. I think if you said all Makhno units must be in supply range of the HQ (even if not in supply) its would stop any silliness. Does Kiev supply PR to Bolsheviks or the Southern Faction if controlled? This is unclear. NO. the PR value is Green, only Nationalists can get them. Does Riga or Kavnas provide PR for the Baltic States? I dont think so. Again no PR counter. Does Riga or Kavnas switch to Youdenitch when he enters the war or must he march there to occupy it. I would say he needs to occupy them. What if the Revolution Mondiale chit has been played and the Baltic >forces of the country have disbanded? No. Remember Youdenitch cannot control the Baltic forces. Why should be automatically get the PRs? Does Bakou provide PR to the whites while neutral? No. They are Neutral. Must the white have forces there first? Still wouldnt help. Must the Bolsheviks declare war? That would enable them to get them as they are no longer neutral. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alan Moorhouse - 06:59am Sep 22, 1999 PST (#53 of 55) Moorcon 23-26th Sept Basingstoke UK - last chance to sign up! - email me. Part Deux Does the setup for the Caucasus Bolshevik forces allow deployment in Tzaritsin? North of the rivers? Not in Tzaritzin but Rostov and two hexes eastward north of the river seem possible. Partisan deployment limits seems vague. How long do they remain on the board? We found them next to useless. We tried a house rule to allow them to be activated by a HQ for deployment. We also thought about allowing them movement (6mp). I think they are useful for defense when pushed back in your own territory. With Partisans appearing on Rail lines etc. and affecting HQ supply they should be useful. However I can see if they are bypassed by the front line they could be left sitting there. I suppose an HQ releasing them back to the Pool by moving through them would do. What is to prevent the Romanian being used ahistorically in that the players choose to avoid taking either Bessarabia immediately thus enabling them to fight longer in the Dnepr region. The Poles have a similar possibility in that they can either take cities already under White control (say by Ukrainians or Southern factions) as part of their quota for victory. Or they can deliberately avoid taking the last city to win the war in order to make a push to aid the Southern Front. Can the Bolsheviks deliber ately forfeit (surrender Bessarabia or Greater Poland) to the Roumanians or Poles? This sort of thing is a helped by using the 5 player game so that the Allied/Nationalist player would want to play the factions correctly. I suspect that this would be a very gamey tactic and wouldnt expect that from the gamers I play with (or myself). 2 Southern HQs are not noted as able to coordinate together on the chart. Is this an error or intentional? We allowed them to attempt coordination with success being a 4. Is optional rule D supposed to be used in the campaign game for realism or balance? Probably an error. I would do as you do. Is there a land link between Azerbaidjan and Armenia? Yes I would say there should be. Please clarify the role of the HQ for Bolshevik Garrison requirements. Do rail lines aid the 12 range? Where did you get that from? Can the HQ activate reinforcing units that appear in a garrisoned city? No. all it can do is move. We played it such that the range was 12 non-rail hexes plus any number of rail hexes. Makes it a bit easy doesnt it? Is it correct that autonomous units out of supply are considered isolated even if they can trace a line of hexes to a supply source? Seems to be. Must be in City or town with rail line to City. The example turn seemed to indicate that the malus for the roll was not applied. Hmmm...looks like it was missed. It also seems out of sync with the definition of a HQ that is out of supply versus Isolation. Also is isolation permanent losses applied to units that cannot retreat from combat due to ZOC but are not lost to attrition rolls. Must the unit have an Isole marker on it before the battle? I'd say that a unit retreating is not out of supply because it is only checked when the unit is activated. Do Mountains have an effect on supply lines? They dont seem to. Do aircraft have a range of 10 for flying out and back combined or is it for each leg? 10 both ways. See the turn example. May a plane land at a different base from taking off if it conducts a mission? I'd say no but if the HQ moves the aircraft should be able to land at its new position. In the political point chart there is an entry: "After Mar 19 -1". What does this refer to? Do not know. If the Whites used the "international pressure" option to try to free the Czar, does the level of victory shift also affect the number of political chits drawn? I'd say no as it is a victory shift not a political level shift. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike Hayman - 08:50am Sep 30, 1999 PST (#55 of 55) Wants to learn more about Rossiya 1917 alan, Thanks for the replies to my questions: a few comments. Makhno never actually did anything in Poland and it is doubtful he could garner any support outside of Ukrainian peasantry, hence northern limits. Interestingly enough there were plenty of operations by him that occured to the EAST of the Dnepr. As for garrison leaders and rail lines. Without the use of rails it seemed as though as many as 3 hq had to be used to satisfy garrison requirements. My spin was that seemed prohibitively difficult to the Bolsheviks! As for gamey tactics unfortunatly there is a tendency amongst a few players in my group to attempt such (very competetive win at all cost types-gamers rather than history buffs). We browbeat when they do but it always looks pissy when I have to say "either you quit playing that way and perverting the spirit of the game with rules loop holes or I will be forced to resign." Very irritating but the pool of players is pretty finite. As for the nationalist option curtailing it: he was the one guilty of the tactic: He saw his goal as preventing a Bolshevik victory period by any means necessary (ie keeping his troops on the board for as long as possible. did the same with the finns, ukrainians and Rumainians-and for that matter czechs whom he sacrificed for big losses to try to save the siberians when they had put their head in a noose. Strangely enough he won (The bolshie had not paid attention to contesting all those points taht could e arned in Dec 20 never to be altered no matter how the war proceded beyond that point.
