njcpcc - Mar 7, 2005 12:14 pm (#3954 Total: 3960) Paul Crispi Liz, There's some discussion about an erroneous tripoli supply rule in JP's Advanced Third Reich. Can someone help out there as we seem to be getting nowhere without some authoritative help. Thanks, Paul Elizabeth Fulda - Mar 7, 2005 3:07 pm (#3955 Total: 3960) Sales/Marketing, Avalanche Press There's no error: "Tripoli is a supply source for Italian units, and for Germans if they're allied (not going to matter if they're not). Supply effects in this game are harsh; units that are out of supply will die permanently. Redeployment (bringing new units to Libya) is going to require the Italian navy to control the Central Med, but asking them to do it every turn wears down the Italian economy and the fleet far beyond the wear and tear of supply traffic. There's a certain amount of shipping not represented in the game, plus the pitiful output of the Tripolitan economy. The Axis forces in Libya did not starve to death, despite shaky sea communications that in game terms would usually equal lack of sea control. "Now, if they want to try the game with Tripoli not an Italian supply source, they're welcome to do so, but I think they'll discover the rule's there for a reason." And so speaks the oracle. Avalanche Liz njcpcc - Mar 7, 2005 3:16 pm (#3956 Total: 3960) Paul Crispi Liz, Thanks. I didn't mean erroneous, that word was too harsh. It just seems that with Tripoli being a permanent(as opposed to a limited) supply source, the Italians and Germans can be supplied rather ahistorically in North Africa. I'll forward your reply. Paul Elizabeth Fulda - Mar 7, 2005 3:57 pm (#3957 Total: 3960) Sales/Marketing, Avalanche Press Well, I can ask: "Turns are three months long. It's three days to get even a slow convoy from Messina to Tripoli. Sea Control means you have the ascendency to conduct major operations like huge troop convoys (Redeployment). The supply capacity is valid for what the Axis sent to Libya and what typically goes there in a game: the Malta Myth greatly overstates the British success at choking off traffic. See Bomb Alley. If the British player lets the German get six tank units across the Med, both he and the Soviet player need to re-examine their strategies." (ok, so I re-wrote that last line to read more diplomatically) Avalanche Liz njcpcc - Mar 7, 2005 4:08 pm (#3958 Total: 3960) Paul Crispi Liz, Okay, you're beginning to sell me. Maybe I am too used to HAVING to supply the Axis by sea in other games. I should probably play it this way and find out for myself. Paul
