2nd Edition Assault The Assault rules included in this game have been considerably revised from the first edition rules (which can be recognized by the U.S. infantryman on the booklet cover). The game charts have also been changed in certain respects (most notably, changed ratings for some weapons on the direct fire charts). The most important rules changes are briefly noted below. Rules 2 and 19. The single artillery phase has been replaced by two (one for each player). Rule 3: Soviet platoons are now individually numbered. Owners of the first edition may desire to add these numbers to their counters; consecutively number all the platoons in each company. Rules 4 and 24A: A command record replaces the former command/controi sheet and operations point markers. Rule 7G: A unit in combat formation in a hex which is attacked by direct fire automatically enters cover at the end of the fire phase. Rule 10: New tables are included to show auto-spot ranges and maximum spotting ranges. Rule 10B2: The terrain level definitions have been changed so that levels now conform to contour lines as well as hexes; different parts of a single hex may be at different levels. Rule 1OE: The definition of auto-spots has been changed to refer to any case in which the spotting roll would be 10 or more. Rule 1OG: Dummies may not spot. Rule 12. Several types of rounds have been renamed. KP is now divided into AP and APDU; TP is now HEAT; API is now SCAP (small caliber armor-piercing). A new category, SCHE (small caliber high explosive), has been introduced. Rules 12 and 20: Direct fire IS rounds have no effect on AFVs other than suppression; they are fired using the provisions of rule 14. Rule 14: When conventional fire occurs against AFVs, the AFVs armor rating is added to its fire defense value. HE rounds (only) may inflict results other than suppression. Rule 17A1: A company's morale depends on its initial number of steps. Rule 19D4: In pass-through fire, the total fire value is halved. Rule 24: Copyable charts have been prepared for all game functions which were previously to be recorded on blank sheets of paper. We believe that these changes have made the Assault system at once more accurate and easier to play.
