Andy Parsons - May 27, 2005 2:43 pm (#123 Total: 127) Blood on the Snow and Winter Fury Hi everyone! I have both Blood on The Snow and Winter Fury - have just played first scenario of BoTS - great fun, hard for the Russians to win - let alone when they only draw one chit two turns in a row! However I noticed that there are different terrain costs between the two games e.g.is Forest in WF the same as Frozen Forest in BoTS or a new terrain type? Even terrain that appears to be the same - e.g. Cultivated. Frozen Lake hex - have different costs in the two games. So do the WF rules usurp the BoTS rules - i.e. are they a sort of version 2 rules that should be applied retrospectively to BoTS? A couple of other queries: a) Artillery strength is halved into Forest hexes (9.24). Does this apply to Bombardment, Offensive and Defensive Support? b) Combat results (9.32). For the defender it states that one half of the required losses must be taken as steps eliminated. In BoTS it states that it is "one half (fractions rounded down)" therefore a defender suffering a 1 step loss result could choose to just retreat (as 1 halved = 0.5, rounded down to 0) However according to the WF Fraction definition (2.1) it states that all fractions are rounded up. Using this approach a defender suffering a 1 step loss result would have to take the step loss ( as 1 halved = 0.5, rounded up to 1). Which is correct? c) Soviet Supply (7.2) A Soviet HQ has to trace an unblocked path no longer than three hexes to a road which leads to etc.. Question does the road between the HQ and the map edge hex have to be free of Finnish units/ZOCs as well? I guess so but it is not clear. Any and all help gratefully received! Many thanks Andy Elizabeth Fulda - May 27, 2005 3:06 pm (#124 Total: 127) Sales/Marketing, Avalanche Press I know this! >So do the WF rules usurp the BoTS rules - i.e. are they a sort of >version 2 rules that should be applied retrospectively to BoTS? Winter Fury takes place south of Blood on the Snow and the snow's not as bad. Play each game with its own terrain costs. >a) Artillery strength is halved into Forest hexes (9.24). Does this >apply to Bombardment, Offensive and Defensive Support? Yes. (well, I cheated and asked) >b) Combat results (9.32). use each game's rules as written (I asked and got some blather about the 0-strength ski patrols in Blood on the Snow needing the rule) >A Soviet HQ has to trace an unblocked path no longer than three hexes to >a road which leads to etc.. Question does the road between the HQ and >the map edge hex have to be free of Finnish units/ZOCs as well? yes Avalanche Liz PS: Blood on the Snow supply is down to "copies put together from spare parts." Andy Parsons - May 29, 2005 4:55 am (#125 Total: 127) Blood on the Snow/Winter Fury queries Liz Many thanks for your swift response - support like that always makes me inclined to think - "hey, perhaps I'll buy another AP game!" I have to say that I am suprised about the answer to the Combat Result question. On Defender 1 results, particularly if the Finns have have broken down into companies (1 step units), the ability to retreat a hex rather than be eliminated makes a big difference - not least in terms of VPs. In terms of the 0-0-12 Ski Patrol units - I have just been playing that they are automatically attacked at maximum odds if they are attacked and fail to withdraw. Should they have a notional defence strength of 1? Two final queries: a) Russian Aircraft (WF 8.6)- Is their Bombardment strength of 8 also halved into Forest hexes? b) Ski-Capable units (WF 12.4) - it states that Finnish ski units get a +1 modifier on their roll, Russains a -1. As you have to roll low (a 1,2 or 3) to withdraw successfully this seems to say that the Russians can do it better? Is that right - as I would have thought the Finns would be better able to slip away, knowing the terrain etc.? Thanks again for all your help so far. Cheers Andy Elizabeth Fulda - May 29, 2005 10:29 am (#126 Total: 127) Sales/Marketing, Avalanche Press DeAr Andy, You're talking about a game that was published 10 years ago, designed even longer ago. Vague designer memories should be a given. Play each game with its own rules. >Should they have a notional defence strength of 1? No. They are zero. >a) Russian Aircraft (WF 8.6)- Is their Bombardment strength of 8 also halved into Forest hexes? yes >b) Ski-Capable units (WF 12.4) - it states that Finnish ski units get a >+1 modifier on their roll, Russains a -1.
