Richard H. Berg - 06:36am May 25, 2002 PST (#2302 of 2338) I can't help it. I was born sneering." Pooh-bah, in "The Mikado", by way of W.S. Gilbert "The two biggies were the definition of unit classes and the weapons matrix. ...MI was mounted infantry, or so I thought until I tried to attack one with LC and discovered that there was no number for it. So it had to be something else, Magyar Infantry perhaps." No, it's Mounted Infantry, as pictured on page 7 of the rules. "there was no number for it" . . . . the "X" should be a '0'. Sorry about that. Don't know why i did it that way. "So the Germans have two unit types, HI and HC. The question then is, does mounted infantry use the HI column, or is that only for dismounted infantry. The latter makes more sense and is in line with other BSO games. But that would mean that mounted infantry is treated as Heavy Cavalry for melee purposes." Mounted Infantry (MI) has its own lines on the matrix; what is the problem? "Since the rules are specific that only Heavy Cavalry can charge, I played that Mounted Infantry couldn't charge." You played correctly. "Which lead to a game that seemed to favour the Magyars a lot." Even with your descriptionm of events, I - and others - have found that the Germans are usually favored . . .concentrate on destroying the Magyar Western Defense line . . . And the Magyar Raiding Party should have a lot of trouble with the Looting (rule). Makes them sitting ducks, as it were. "If mounted infantry CAN charge, that would make a huge difference on how the game would have played out." They can't. They were not trained to do that. And only the Bavarians and Bohemian letterd units are MI . . . the Germans have lots of HC. But you can dismount the MI, at which point they become rather good against the Magyar LC (defensively). A bunch of questions as to exactly how reaction charges are handled also popped up. "For example, a HC is attacked by non-HC from the flank and rear. It successfully reaction charges and is now the attacker. It only faces one of the formerly attacking units. Does that mean the other unit doesn't get to attack, since in reaction charges it is the defender who attacks?" Hmmm. What you have to do here is first resolve the reactiuon charge. If the reacting HC is still in the same hex and can be attacked by the original non-HC, the latter may now resolve that attack. "And if a missile unit fires at several hexes range, how does a reaction charge work then?" If the DR allows a reaction charge, simply move the charging unit adjacent to the firing unit. "By the way, which way is north on the map? Important for setup purposes." The Schmutter river runs along the north edge. The Magyar Raiding Party is entering from the south. I thought there was a "direction indicator" on the map. RHB Below is a Q and A exchange I had with Richard Berg of BSO Games regarding his game The Last Raid. Q: Can Hungarian LC which have a looting marker on them (i.e., they just moved onto the German wagons) retreat before combat? (My assumption is no, since they're too busy doing other things). A: They cannot so retreat. Q: Can Hungarian LC which have looted (i.e., they have now moved off the wagon counters) retreat before combat? (My assumption is yes, since they are now mounted up). A: They can so retreat.
