Rob Bottos - Oct 8, 2006 2:59 am (#54 Total: 62) On the table: To the Halls of Montezuma - playtest, Dead of Winter - playtest, Circus Minimus. Reading: Six Armies in Normandy, Gaunt's Ghosts: Ghostmaker. A Master Stroke Jim/Perry, Mark w. and I sat down and played this game today. Mark was right, it is an excellent little game. The rules were easy to pick up as they are very similar to those that were used in Breaking into Valhalla. The game components are very nice and I will be printing out my own copy on a nice sheet of glossy photo paper once I get new ink for my printer. The counters are very nice and clear in the information they need to convey. They're not busy and the colour scheme is fantastic. We played the game through to conclusion in about 3 hours. Mark's Allies won with a narrow margin of 2 victory points. The game definitely has replayability and there are several different approaches I'd like to try as the Japanese. A few things we noticed during our playthrough. 1. Hex F11, the TEC says this hex is prohibited but it has a road through it? We played that you could move and trace supply through this hex but could not stack in it for combat purposes. 2. The victory conditions refer to Meiktila as being comprised of 2 hexes but on the map it is only 1 hex, H11. 3. With the lake hexes being prohibited terrain this means thats Meiktila can only be attacked from H10, G10, I11 and H12. 4. The supply status table says that when the allied supply level is 1, or 2 then the allied units are in supply on a die roll of 1-2. The table does not say what happens if the Allies are at zero supplies. In hindsight I'm now going to say that all the Allied units would automatically be out of supply. In our game we assumed that with even zero supplies that the allies should still have a chance of scrounging up supplies so we had them roll as if they were at level 1 or 2. One last point, despite being a dtp game, this game is definitely top notch and you can see the love and attention that has been put into it. This game definitely deserves a professional treatment and marketing campaign. I can see this game as one of L2's new folio games but I think it would also do well in a quad pack with a few other battles using this same set of rules. We played that you could move and trace supply through this hex but could not stack in it for combat purposes. The road is there for movement and supply purposes only (your interpretation is correct). 2. The victory conditions refer to Meiktila as being comprised of 2 hexes but on the map it is only 1 hex, H11. In the playtest version of the map the city stretched into H12. Disregard the reference to both hexes. 3. With the lake hexes being prohibited terrain this means thats Meiktila can only be attacked from H10, G10, I11 and H12. Correct. Allied units are all automatically out of supply if the Supply Level drops to zero. It is unlikely such a small game would be produced that could generate a profit. I decided to put it out as a free download so someone could enjoy it. I'm also hoping the bigger game in the entire 1945 Burma Campaign will be done if this freebie generates enough interest. BTW, Clash of Arms will be redoing Breaking Into Valhalla someday. I imagine after the move to their new digs that one will get on the agenda. Cheers!
