garry haggerty - 08:40pm Sep 23, 2001 PST (#3257 of 3260) Can anyone here help out with some SAMURAI & KATANA questions? 4) Set-Up (last line): "During the first turn each player draws 5 cards." Do players start the game with 5 cards or do they start with no cards (for Phases 1-3 of Turn 1) and then draw 5 cards in Phase 4 of Turn 1 (regardless of clan points)? 8.2) Samurai Movements. The rule reads as though a 1 koku payment only permits samurai in the same territory to move to one adjacent territory. Is that correct? I ask because (8.2) also says "A movement into a[n enemy] territory is regarded as an attack: Combat ensues. This combat must be fought before making other movement" and Rule 9 says "Combats in different territories cannot be concluded simultaneously..." and (for drawn combats or attacker defeats) "...the attacking player retraces his steps back to the territory (or territories ) he left." Taken in combination, these rules seem to suggest the following situations would be deemed a single move action costing 1 koku: Situation 1: territory X is adjacent to territories Y and Z. Would moving samurai from X into both Y and Z cost 2 koku or 1 koku? Situation 2: Red controls territory X and Y. Both are adjacent to Z. Can Red move Samurai into Z from both X and Y for 1 koku? 9) Combat. When the defender loses a combat, can his surviving samurai can be placed in any territory that belongs to the defending player -- not just those that are adjacent to the territory where the combat ocurred? Sect Cards Do the samurai placed in the affected territory come from the player's samurai that are already on the board or from his off-board reserve? Ed Wimble - 07:54am Sep 25, 2001 PST (#3259 of 3260) Garry, Prior to the start of play each player is dealt 5 cards. 8.2: I believe the problem here is with the parenthetical phrase "(or territories)." Delete this. Thus, it costs one Koku to move from one territory to the next regardless of the number of samurai you move from that territory. But if more than one territory is involved into which you want to move, or to move from, each separate territory will count as another action, and require that many more Koku. One action then, requiring one Koku, is defined as moving samurai from one territory to one other. 9: Adjacent territories occupied by the player (this includes those with sea links). Sect Cards: Take him from your reserve. My take on it, however, is that even if you remove several samurai from the territory, they are replaced by only one of yours. Lastly, Chris Moeller has started a folder under Boardgames: Euro for this game. A good place for future questions.
