From: mab@dst17.wdl.loral.com (Mark A Biggar) Subject: Kingmaker: General Articles The Following is a List of all the articles about Kingmaker that have appeared in the General magazine with a mini-review of each article: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= General Vol 14 No 2 Jul-Aug 1977 The "Kingmaker" issue, a must have for all serious players. "Playing Your Hand In Kingmaker" by Richard Berg Page 3 General strategy article about evaluating you initial hand in Kingmaker. Also gives broad strategy hints about mid and end game play. "In Praise of Kingmaker" by Charles Vasey Page 7 Discusses how well the game simulates the "War of the Roses" time period. Provides a good outline of the actual event and battles fought during the war. "Kingmaker by Mail" by Don Turnbull Page 10 Turnbull's personal experience at running PBM Kingmaker games. Includes rule adjustments necessary for PBM including simultaneous movement and fog-of-war. "Postal Kingmaker Mechanics" by Will McCullam Page 12 More discussion of PBM games. Includes a annotated map naming and numbering every space on the board that doesn't already contain a town, city, castle or other named place. This is very useful if you need to pause a Kingmaker game and have to record where to put all the pieces on the board. "DESIGN ANALYSIS -= Kingmaker Rules Explained" by Mick Uhl Page 14 This is the Generals standard column for answering game questions. All these questions and answers are repeated at the back of the current edition rule book. "More Kingmaker Surprises -= New Event Cards for Kingmaker" by Mick Uhl Page 15 This is the article that described the first expansion card set for Kingmaker. This set of cards can be ordered either directly from AH or through you local hobby gaming store. This card set includes: Treachery Gales at Sea Refuge Vacillating Allegiance Catastrophe Royal Death All of these make for a more interesting game, but warning the Catastrophe cards can really slow a game down. "And Still More Kingmaker Surprises" by Mick Uhl Page 16 Some more optional rules: Rules for additional forces due to towns and cities. Rule about Shuffling the Event deck on Embassies. Rules about additional penalties for losing battles. Rules for Sea combat including blockade. The Two turn siege rule (you announce the siege this turn and resolve it next turn with bad weather delaying the siege yet another turn, this allow for outside forces to relieve sieges and gives inside forces a chance to come out and do battle in the open or send out assassins in an attempt to reduce the besieging force to below the power need to execute the siege) I have only used the shuffle and the 2 turn siege rules in tournament play. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= General Vol 17 No 5 Jan-Feb 1981 "The Crowning Accomplishment" by Mike La Beau Page 24 This is an advanced strategy article. It goes into detail about which offices and titles are best given to which nobles. It includes a complete list of all "call" cards in the event deck. For example, even though Mowbray is called 7 places and the Marshal is called 10 places giving Mowbray the office of marshal is not really bad because six of the places Mowbray is called the Marshal is also called so the overlap cancels out. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= General Vol 20 No 4 "The Hazard of the Draw -= New Options and Events for Kingmaker" by Tim Williams Page 41 The event cards described in this article are NOT available from AH and AH has said they have no plans to produce them. If you have bought the first expansion card set you have just enough blank cards to hand produce this second set. Because it is getting very hard to find this copy of the General, I am going to go into detail about the new cards and optional rules in a follow up article. Optional Rules. 1) event deck shuffling on Embassies 2) Random initial placement of royal hiers 3) Rules dealing with Ireland a) No refuge needed for Ireland b) City of Dublin c) Irish Kerns (new crown card) NEW EVENT CARDS 1) Plague in Dublin 2) Mercs Go Home SAXONS 3) Religious Diet 4) Heresy 5) Papal Diet 6) Excommunication 7) Royal Visit King to Ireland 8) Royal Hunt 9) Royal Heir Escapes 10) Treaty With France King to Continent 11) Mercenary Strife 12) Mutiny 13) Defeatism Rife 14) French Treachery 15) War In Europe 16) Scots Invasion 17) Assassination -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= General Vol 26 No 1 "An Assembly Of Gentlemen" by James Werbaneth Page 31 A simple strategy article on manipulating parliament in the basic game. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= General Vol 26 no 4 "Being Your Own King" by Gabriel Gonzalez Page 24 A interesting variant rule set where you play one of the heirs and have to go around recruiting a faction of nobles to support you. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -- Mark Biggar mab@wdl.loral.com
