From: Tigermind@aol.com Subject: VITP 2nd edition > I recently acquired a 1977 (first?) edition copy of Victory in the > Pacific. Does anybody know how much of a change the 2nd edition > rules are? Did the later edition change the map or counters? The map and counters did not change. Rule changes were fairly minor. These include: When Marines and SNLF in ports or bases are air raided, no damage dice are rolled. Instead, each hit puts one point of damage on the unit. So to kill a US Marine in a port, you need 5 hits. If the Japanese capture Pearl Harbor, US reinforcements come in at Samoa on subsequent turns. Pearl Harbors repair capacity also transfers to Samoa. If both PH and Samoa are lost, the repair capability goes away and the US reinforcements are lost. Control of a sea area(s) completely surrounding a base for two consecutive turns will flip a base back at the end of a turn even if it had just been invaded. Example: IJN holds Midway and the CPO on turn 2. On turn 3, a US Marine invades Midway. IJN LBA based at Midway on turn 3 are then disabled. However, after combat is concluded for turn 3, the IJN still has a patrolling ship in the CPO. Midway falls back to the IJN at the end of turn 3 due to isolation. Rules clarifications used at Avaloncon (this is the best stuff available) may be obtained by e-mailing Glenn Petroski at GELP@juno.com. He will undoubtably ask for a dollar or two to defray copying and postage. It's worth it if you want to have all the errata and clarifications for VITP. It runs to 6 very nicely formatted pages or so. Mostly minor clarification stuff. Hope this helps.
