From: LESLIE SPAIN Subject: BOARD - 3 DoG - Day 1 0740-1040 October 14, 1996 The Three Days of Gettysburg I am going to attempt to maintain a narrative of our game which we should be playing on a weekly basis for some time. I am playing the Confederate side so most of my commentary will be from that perspective. We are using the full set of rules including the command sections. We are also using: Fatigue Variable Cohesion for Green Units. We are not using the Wrap-Around rule found in the errata. I have made one other change in the game from the published errata. The errata brings in Gen. Wainwright (I Corps Arty) with Gen. Reynolds (I Corps). I have an authoritative reference that states he entered with the majority of the 1st Corps artillery at 0940. This is only an important point if Doubleday arrives early, but it is accurate. July 1 0740-0800 The Confederates enter the map with Davis' Brigade leading. Archer's brigade follows in column along the Chambersburg Pike. I chose Davis to travel first due to the expectation of casualties in the leading units and Davis' unit's, while green, are more durable. Some of Buford's units saddle up and advance to delay the Confederates on the flanks, while the rest begin breastworks. Buford is slightly surprised when Davis and Archer deploy rapidly astride the Chambersburg Pike in front of Whisler's Ridge. The cavalry advanced on the flank are unable to react quickly enough to prevent deployment. 0820-0840 Gen Doubleday, unusually alert on this July morning, arrives on the map at his first opportunity (20% chance) and begins to move toward the sound of the guns. Pegram's artillery deploys on Whisler's Ridge while some of Gamble's units linger on the Confederate right flank hoping for an opportunity to strike. Davis and Archer move toward Herr's Ridge under fire from Calef's Battery. The green units under Davis respond to fire magnificently (55NC Cohesion 7, 42MS Cohesion 6). This day, Gen. Davis has the second best brigade in Heth's Division. 0900-0920 Pegram's artillery fire disorders Calef. Davis successfully rolls for ME and closes in on the flank of Calef and his supporting infantry. Calef is abandoned by his supporting infantry, is routed and destroyed, but follow up shock attacks are stopped cold. Brockenbrough arrives leading Pettigrew on the Chambersburg Pike. 0940-1000 The Confederates are unable to sustain their early success as Archer's brigade retreats in confusion, and Davis halts to reform his regiments (All green units are cohesion 1 when disordered.). Pettigrew is deployed to the right to force back a portion of Gamble's command. Gamble is now split with a portion on the Union left near the Herr farm extending all the way to the Teller Farm near Whisler's Ridge while the rest stands between Schoolhouse Ridge and the Herr Tavern. Devin's regiments hold firm on the Union right. Wadsworth's Division reaches the back side of Herr Ridge near the Herr Tavern and Doubleday moves into position along Herr Ridge near the Hass Farm. Heth's four brigades are now opposed by four Union infantry brigades and two cavalry brigades. 1020-1040 Brockenbrough supported by Pegram and Archer begin to pressure Devin as Pettigrew slowly advances on the Confederate right. Devin is forced off of the Schoolhouse Ridge extension and begins to withdraw slowly toward the main Union line along the back side of Herr's Ridge. Pegram deploys forward with his artillery in support of this attack. Davis now shifts direction and moves with Pettigrew to strike Doubleday's division which extends from the Herr Farm along the ridge in front of the Hass Farm. Wadsworth begins to build breastworks astride the Chambersburg Pike along the back side of Herr's Ridge as Doubleday resists Pettigrew and Davis. 1040 Summary: Confederate Forces: Brockenbrough - N of Schoolhouse Ridge thru Voneida Farm - 2SP Loss, 3 Reg Dis, Fat OK Archer/Pegram - Schoolhouse Ridge astride Chambersburg Pike - 3SP Loss, 0 Reg Dis, Fat OK Davis - adj to Herr Tavern to N of Herr Farm - 7SP Loss, 2 Reg Dis, Fat None Pettigrew - adj to Herr Farm along front slope of ridge toward Plank Farm - 2SP Loss, 2 Reg Dis, Fat None Union Forces: Gamble - split withdrawing toward Bender and Harmon Farms - 3SP Loss, 0 Reg Dis, Fat 1 Devin - withdrawing toward Diselman Farm - 6SP Loss, 2 Reg Dis, 1 Reg Rout, Fat 2 Doubleday - Herr Farm extending along Herr Ridge in front of Hass Farm - 0SP Loss, 2 Reg Dis, Fat OK,0 Wadsworth - Back of Herr's Ridge from N of RR Cut to woods near Herr Farm - 0SP Loss, 0 Dis, Fat None,1 Robinson/Wainwright - approaching (2-3 turns) Notes: Doubleday's early arrival has really thrown a crimp into Heth's attack. Heth will be shifting his entire division to attack Doubleday as Pender's division comes on line. Pender gets the job of meeting the Iron Brigade. Whether a forward defense with the 1st Corps is a good idea or not remains to be seen. If I push him away from Herr's Ridge, retreating under fire from Pegram/McIntosh guns posted on the Ridge might be difficult. We shall see. lcspain@sanders.com
