From: Philipp Klarmann Subject: Re: Morse Code by UGG A few weeks ago I commented on this upcoming new title and promised to tell you more: Well the game is in its final stages due to reasons of quality checks and rules clarifications. The problem was that the rules were written two years ago in German first and were translated in English. That itself led to nice confusion among the translators (or do you know a good German-English wargame rules translator and editor?). The game itself was playtested three years now. Next week will be the final meeting of the rules editors... I can only say that the rules are now organized similar to MiH games, about 40 pages long and have the most extensive examples I have seen in years. Anybody who does not understand a rule now is IMO a hopeless case :)))). The rules cover all necessary details for the whole planned Empires in Apocalypse series. The gameplay itself is very easy, some nice rules about tank exploitation (called tank battles) and a combat system that reminds of Russian Front (but better :)). How does it play? Well just one word... France will fall in 4-8 weeks depending on gameplay. So the infamous France-holds-out-till-1941-syndrome (as seen in other games) is cured. As for historical accuracy... it is a strategic game on corps level, so do not expect to find historic units at historic places everytime. Next will be the Eastern Front. The counters represent corps and air assets (100-200 planes), capital ships and their escorts, destroyer squadrons, transports.... Two maps.... 1800 counter (about), charts and tables, 20-sided die, two 6-sided die. One gameturn represents one month of real time. The game allows for quick breakthroughs with tanks using a tank battle system slightly similar to the blitz system in Russian Front (AH). But Udo Grebe the designer says that it was developed independently and only after a year or so somebody brought up the similarity (and he said he was shocked... he thought it was his own clever idea... think about morphogenetic fields here (Sheldrake fans will know what I am talking about)). I liked the land combat system a lot during rules editing. Very simple, very elegant, 1000 possibilities. The naval system should work, too. I think it has a clever combat segments (each unit fires individually). If you are more on the abstract side, you will love it. The best about the rules book: every larger part has easy to understand examples.
