From: "Williams" Subject: Fw: [REVISED] REVIEW SUBMISSION: "Civil War" Avalon Hill 1961 Civil War (AH) Published AHGC 1961 Price: $2.95 [1961] A 4/8/2000 review: Mounted map, hex grid, displaying MO-PA/ E.TX-N.FL, East U.S. White map with blue thru-hex rivers, black railroads, brown rough terrain, cities and ports. Rules "learning time: 15 min." with examples of play. Game Length "60-90 min". Start 6 blue plastic "pawns" North, 6 red pawns South, reinforcing to 15 and 9 respectively. Monthly Turns. 1861-65. One pawn/hex max. Movement max.: 2 hexes PLUS: 8 on Railroads (both sides), or 8 on rivers or sea for North, 2 on rivers for South. All, any or none may move. Combat table similar to early 60's AH wargames. Terrain doubles defense. Victory: Capture or dispute control of reinforcement centers. I set up and played this game through within an hour of receiving it. I put the game away for two weeks, thinking (wrongly) it was too simple and one-sided. Then, I realized that, after all, it was a game that set up/played in a flash. Two weeks is the time "Mr. Know-it-all" or "STUPID" took to get "Insight". "But evening the odds are the requirements for victory..." (sic), states an included flyer. Giving "Player's Notes" here would compromise an already simple challenge. Far more realistic than MB's "Battle Cry" or PB's "1863". As "easy" as Xeno #403 "Civil War". Simpler and faster than GDW's "A House Divided". ~~~Jimmy Williams 04/08/00 spikewilliams@qx.net
