From: "Cisco" Subject: [preachers-wargame] Crisis Korea I got to play the "Pusan" scenario in Crisis Korea. I was the North Koreans and Mark played the South. The North really has a big advantage in firepower, including many mechanized troops, and a block buster tank division. A signature feature of that game is that you can't just zoom through cities, installations, and urbanized areas. First you have to fight any enemy troops in these places. Then after killing them or getting them to retreat, then you have to attempt to "advance" into these areas. You roll on a table. You have a better chance with a stack of units, led with a high efficiency ranked division. But you can try it with even a single brigade. The advance will either be successful, or not, or not successful with a step loss. After you are able to advance into these areas, you put your control flag on it and it is now friendly to you. But - if the enemy manages to get troops into it - it flips back! Requiring you to go back and deal with it all over again. Mark did that to me a few times. It was very frustrating! But - I didn't want to use up units just to do garrison duty. Another feature of the game system is the concept of initiative. If one side has the initiative, then there are more combat and movement phases - things move alot faster. If no one has initiative, then a turn is just a basic ugo-igo. You maintain initiative by doing well and at the same time making sure your enemy doesn't do well, victory point wise. You earn victory points for various events, the main ones being capturing urban, city, town and installation hexes, and killing units. I was able to maintain initiative throughout the scenario. I managed to get troops all the way down to Pusan and was able to advance into two hexes of it - allowing me to roll each turn on the "Sudden Victory" table. Apparently the South Korean government is so shook up by the loss of a couple hexes of Pusan that they start talking about surrender. And meanwhile the Americans might intervene on any turn. In our game, the Americans came in late, and that in combination with "Storm" weather on two turns, helped me hold on to a "substantial" victory. The North Koreans really cannot stand toe-to-toe with the Americans. A few American Marines landed in an airbase and came charging out and smashing my troops - but it was the last turn and they didn't have time to do much to alter the victory point levels. I'm looking forward to playing a bigger scenario. ------------------------ Yahoo! Groups Sponsor --------------------~--> Get fast access to your favorite Yahoo! Groups.
