We have played this several times in the past two weeks. I found the game to be easier than 2210 but more complicated than 'regular' Risk. This is nothing like Knizia's LotR; this is a Risk variant. There are mission cards that, when completed, provide additional armies and points. There are leaders (one for each player vrs the 5 found in 2210). The map is well done with mountains and rivers blocking movement. The territory cards, when in sets, provide additional armies as in the original game however they are specific to the set and do not increase as additional sets are submitted. The game is fairly quick as the fellowship moves one space each player turn (i.e. 4 spaces in a 4 player game unless a card is played that prevents the movement). If nothing slows the fellowship from moving then there will only be 13 player turns - 3 times around the board (Risk 2210 has 5 turns). Finally, there are event and adventure cards mixed in with the mission cards. These add some flavor to the game. The board and the pieces are very nice. There are 3 types of armies for the good forces and 3 different types for the evil crew. A plus for Hasbro - they did an excellent job on the packaging. Obviously someone there has learned fron the German style as there is a molded plastic tray that holds all of the bits; there are even 5 molded spots for the dice. If you like Risk, then Risk:LotR is a better game. If you don't care for Risk I doubt that this would be fun. Two other points: 1. we have played this two-player twice now and the game works very well (unlike every other version of Risk in which the two-player game seems broken). 2. The box claims that this is for ages 9 and older. That's off the mark. I just don't believe that the average 9 year old could grasp the ideas and strategy required. (Better they played Carcassone!)
