From Roberto Chiavini Risorgimento (Strategy & Tactics) An operational recreation of all the three wars fought by the Italian in the midst of Nineteenth century to gain her independence, coming with several different scenarios, this game is worth probably more than a try, thanks to designer Mike Benninghoff approach to the subject. Even if botched by several important errata (for example, three different tables important for the game are absent in the rules and were published only in the following issue of the magazine, number 188), the game is simple enough to be played easily by newcomers, but with several interesting innovation even for the veteran players. Graphics is medium, normal for a Strategy & Tactics of that period, with combat units of various types rated for combat, efficiency/morale and movement. There are rules for political events (through chits drawing), mobilization of reinforcements and replacements (at the start of each three-days long turn, with possible variation from scenario to scenario), then movement (that uses a special table, with several possible results) and diceless combat, that uses a chit drawing result, with tactical initiative (gained through a modified die roll) really important, as the player taking the initiative having the chance to defeat the enemy before suffering any losses. Combat of this type may be debatable for this strange type of resolution, but it seems good for this particular kind of game. Full of strategical options, with a nice range of different scenarios, the game is very good for a magazine offer, and, resolved the problems with the errata, is a good addition to anyone library. I rate the game 7 in a 1-10 scale (with a 3 to the publisher for forgetting the tables…)
