This time I played the game solo. Initial random placement of Chechen units saw a good portion in the rear of the Russian positions. An "Allah Akbar" charge and the Russian left flank was over run. Several Chechen units surged into the area between hill 776 and 6th company. The Chechens set up a line facing 6th company cutting them off from hill 776. The situation for the Russians in the first turn looked bleak. A manditory withdrawal to hill 776 was rolled and I decided the only way to get to hill 776 was to smash the Chechen units in the rear area before pulling out.The Chechens in the rear area resist numerous attacks but finally succumb to Russian artillery. This action ties up allot of 6th company. Meanwhile the Chechens in the gap don’t stand by idle and mount two charges into the right flank of 6th Company in an attempt to widen the gap between 6th Company and the units on hill 776. These attacks see the Russians valiantly, incredible die rolls! slay the Chechens in hand to hand combat. Alas, for the Russians the Chechens mount another “Allah Akbar” charge and kill the Russian units trying to hold the right flank. The situation at this point looks disastrous for the Russians. Russian morale plummets as losses mount. The withdrawal to Hill 776 is in a shambles. Chechen reinforcements plunge into the gap and all looks lost for 6th Company. It is at this time that the Russian reinforcements make their presence felt. The Russian units on hill 776 are overrun and killed. The remnants of 6th company still struggle just to survive in the saddle area unable to withdraw to hill 776 due to the Chechen blockade. With hill 776 in Chechen hands the reinforcements start a march to retake hill 776. Spetsnaz units from the south rush northwards in the hopes of saving at least one squad of 6th Company in the saddle area. 1st company rushes to hill 776 and calls in a 6-gun salvo on the hilltop. This meets with no success and units of the 1st Company move up the slopes of Hill 776. Unfortunately the Chechens unleash some brutal small arms fire suppressing 1st Company! Major Dontovalev is killed along with two of his units when Chechen mortar fire lands on his position with devastating effect. The last turn of the game sees the Russians retake hill 776 in a miracle melee role that causes the death of 4 Chechen units! The victory tally sees the Russians pull off an easy victory with the last turn recap of hill 776. All in all it was an enjoyable experience. I ran into some issues with some rules. The following are some issues I ran into: If members of 6th Company have their chits removed from play because of losses how can any unit, who’s chit has been removed, be attacked by Chechen units since they cannot fire or move? All action /fire markers are removed at the start of a new turn? During a night turn if a unit moves adjacent to an enemy unit and does not fire can the enemy unit fire at this unit? Melee can occur by a unit being simply within its MP allowance? Despite these issues the game again was a blast! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- alan moore - 01:22pm Oct 16, 2002 PST (#313 of 314) Yes to all questions.
