Here are the rules we use, they work very well and only add 1 more step to
bombing runs.

-Attacker moves bombers and fighter escorts to attack.
-Defender decides how many fighters will intercept.
Interceptors "attack" at a 3
Escorts "defend" at a 4
Bombers "defend" at a 1

There is only 1 round of combat.

If # Escorts > # Interceptors, the bombers are safe from attack.
If # Escorts < # Interceptors, each extra Interceptor attacks a bomber.

Bombers surviving combat and those not attacked proceed to target.  AA guns
then fire.

Here are some examples:

Attacker: 3 Bombers, 3 Fighter Escorts
Defender: 2 Fighter Interceptors
Result: 2 Interceptors attack 3 Escorts, Bombers proceed to target

Attacker: 3 Bombers, 3 Fighter Escorts
Defender: 4 Fighter Interceptors
Result: 3 Interceptors attack 3 Escorts, 1 Interceptor attacks 1 Bomber.
(Note: Roll the 4th Interceptor's attack seperate because the casualty must be
a bomber)
If the Bomber survives the attack, it proceeds to target with the other 2.

Attacker: 3 Bombers, 3 Fighter Escorts
Defender: 7 Fighter Interceptors
Result: 3 Interceptors attack 3 Escorts, 4 Interceptors attack 3 Bombers.
Any surviving Bombers proceed to target.

Also, the attacker must announce at the start of the attack phase any area's
that have conventional attacks and strategic bombing runs.  The defender must
then choose which combat they will participate in. If you have multiple
fighters, they can have different assignments. (ie. 3 defend from ground
attack, 2 attack strategic bombers.)

These rules may seem complex, but when writing them I tried to be as detailed
as possible to avoid and confusion.  In practice they work very smoothly.
