From: Markus Stumptner Subject: [consim-l] Albion Challenge Combat (fwd) For Dave and others who may be interested, here's something I got from Gary Robinson, who has played Albion a lot, concerning challenge combat. He pointed out that there are some weirdnesses there (such as that the asymmetrical CRT means that the challenger has an advantage) and suggested an alternative, with a little more color. Want to try this the next time. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 5 Oct 2000 19:39:14 -0400 From: Gary J. I used a die to record hit points for each duelist (each started with 6) so it fits the Albion scale nicely. Modified for Albion, it would go something like this: Each round, each player rolls a d6 to see the effect of his attack on his enemy. The results of each roll are as follows: 6: Hit. You score a hit. If not negated by a Parry, roll again for damage. The damage done is equal to a random number from 1 to the strength of the character. Example: a strength 4 character does from 1 to 4 damage (roll a d4). 5: Parry. You parry an enemy blow. Negates an enemy 6 rolled this round, i.e. it cancels an enemy Hit and no damage is rolled against you. 2 through 4: No effect. 1: Fumble. You drop your weapon or miss your footing badly. No effect, plus you do not get to roll next round. On the round that a character is knocked down to 1 remaining health point, the character is stunned and misses its next round as if it dropped its weapon. If it also drops it weapon that round, it misses two rounds. Heroes: when fighting non-Heroic characters, Heroes get a +1 to all their die rolls. They may also choose to treat a Hit they roll as a Parry instead. Example: A wounded Hero with 3 hit points left is fighting an unwounded non-Hero Captain with 4 hit points in Trial by Combat. Round 1: Hero rolls 4+1 = 5, Captain rolls 3. No effect. Round 2: Hero rolls 3+1 = 4, Captain rolls a 6, and hits. Captain rolls a d4 for damage, scores a 2. The Hero is stunned since he only has one hit point left. Round 3: Captain rolls a 2, no effect. Round 4: Hero rolls a 5+1=6, Captain rolls a 6. The Hero decides to treat his Hit as a Parry so he does not lose his last hit point in a simultaneous exchange of hits. Round 5: Hero rolls a 6+1=7, Captain rolls a 4. The Hero hits. His normal unwounded Strength is 6 so he rolls a d6 for damage. He rolls a 5, killing the Captain outright, and staggers off the battlefield. Obviously a little tweaking would be required to account for certain magic weapons and special character powers, but overall I think it works.
