BATTLE CRY - AVALON HILL OPTIONAL RULE (09/10/03) I. Optional Battle Rule A. Melees 1. Any cavalry or infantry unit, may move into a hex containing an enemy unit. 2. A general may join into the melee with another unattached unit. 3. Procedure. a. Both sides roll for hits. b. Attacking and defending units roll 1 die per figure, this includes any attached generals. c. Defender units fire first. Fire is not simultaneous, the results are taken immediately against the attacker. d. Any lone defending general still rolls one die, but only to see if the retreat symbol is rolled, which allows the general to escape. Otherwise, the general is immediately captured. e. Losses and retreat results are done before the attacker rolls. f. If the only unit left is an attacking general, it must retreat. g. Any surviving attacking figures, if not retreated, roll for results. h. Charging cavalry against infantry or artillery gets to roll 1 extra die. i. If no retreat symbols are rolled, control of the hex is given to the side with the most figures in the hex. The other side is forced to retreat 1 hex. Any ties go to the defender. If a defending general is the only figure left, it cannot retain possession of the hex, it must retreat. j. Terrain effects are ignored for die roll purposes. k. Units which cannot retreat are eliminated.
