Kinder, Gentler Luftschiff Version 0.3 12/7/01 Jeff Petraska (ar877@detroit.freenet.org) These modifications to the rules for Luftschiff are proposed to make individual missions easier to complete. Their net effect is to reduce the frequency of dangerous weather and encounters with British forces during maritime flight. These changes should improve the chances of survival for the zeppelin and its crew, and therefore increase the chances of success for most missions. The reduction in maritime encounters may actually reduce the chances of success for North Sea patrol missions. These rules have not been tested with the two Luftschiff expansion sets, Riesenflugzeugabteilungen or ZRCV Flying Flattops, and are thus (for now) recommended only for use in Luftschiff. 1.0 Encounter Rolls for Situation Cards Several situation cards now require an encounter die roll before they take effect. In some cases, the encounter die roll values required for the event to occur are dependent upon scenario conditions such as season or territory. In any case, the situation card is drawn and placed on the mapsheet per F2. If the card requires an encounter die roll, roll the die and refer to the list below. If the die roll falls within the range shown below, the situation card occurs as normal. If the die roll falls outside the specified range, the event represented by that situation card does not occur. The card still counts towards the completion of the current mission terrotory, and is still placed and moved on the mapsheet to reflect the zeppelin's movement. (Note: The only time a failed encounter card is truly required to be placed and moved on the mapsheet is when it is the last card of the current mission segment. In other instances the player may choose to remove the card as described in the note under rule F2 in the Luftschiff rulebook.) The encounter die roll is separate from any die roll that may be subsequently required if the card takes effect, such as a die roll for frostbite or asphyxiation. 1.1 Seasonal Encounters Some weather-related situation cards have encounter values that are season- dependent. Prior to the start of a mission the player should either choose one of the following seasons, or roll a die to select one randomly: 1-2 = Summer, 3-4 = Spring/Fall, 5-6 = Winter The mission is assumed to occur during the selected season of the year, which can affect the type of weather the zeppelin is likely to encounter. The following cards have seasonal encounter values as shown below: summer spring/fall winter Frostbite 1-4 1-6 (certain) 1-6 (certain) Rain 1-2 1-2 0 (never) Snow Load on Stabilizer 0 (never) 1 1-2 Hail 1-2 1-2 0 (never) Storm 1-2 1-2 1-2 1.2 Territorial Encounters The following situation cards have encounter values only when drawn for flight over maritime territory. When drawn over hostile territory the card takes effect as normal (which may mean not at all, in most cases). The encounter values for the cards given below are not season-dependent. R.N.A.S Raid 1-3 Capital Ship 1-3 Destroyer 1-3 Seaplane Tender 1-3 Aircraft Carrier 1-3 Submarine 1-3 Minefield Detected 1-3 St. Elmo's Fire 1-3 For flight over hostile territory, all situation cards take effect normally except for those with season-dependent encounter values described in 1.1. 2.0 Ship Speeds The speeds of British ships as specified in J17-J21 are reduced as follows: Destroyer: 2 Left Capital Ship: 2 Left Carrier: 1 Left Seaplane Tender: 0 Submarine: 0 Aircraft launched from a destroyer, capital ship, or carrier are assumed to have a starting speed equal to their stall speed when their engines are started.
