The Editor's Soapbox >From the start, Simulations Online has brought wargamers industry news direct from the people who drive this hobby. What sets us apart from other wargame magazines is that we deliver the news as it happens, many of our articles cover wargame events and new releases that are only a few weeks (if not days) old. To continue bringing you the most informative wargame magazine around, I'm very pleased to announce the addition of a new editor to Simulations Online staff. Steven Cole needs no little or introduction since he has been involved with the wargaming hobby for years. Up until very recently, Steve could be found heading up the Military Roundtable on the GEnie network. Steven stepped down from his position to concentrate on other things and we jumped at the chance to add him to our staff! Steve will be sending us military and political news from around the globe - most of this information is unavailable anywhere at any price and I'm sure everyone will eagerly await Steve's FYEO column in each issue of Simulations Online. WARGAMING TIP OF THE MONTH: If you're like me, you love computer strategy and wargames as much as board wargames, but finding a magazine that does justice to both has been impossible - until now. STRATEGY PLUS is a new magazine from across the sea (don't most wargame magazine come from across the sea?) in England. STRATEGY PLUS covers wargames and strategy games in both formats and is now available as of issue #12 in the U.S. PRESS RELEASE ============= Almost exactly one year ago Strategy Plus was launched at the European Computer Entertainment Show in London. Few people thought it would survive; a full colour mag on high quality art paper, written and produced by gamers up against some of the biggest names in publishing, no arcade games, no consoles, no chance. Now it is being launched in the US. The emphasis in Strategy Plus is on MS DOS games. These account for approximately 90% of the coverage. The remaining 10% being Amiga and ST, though most of the games on those platforms are eventually ported over to the PC. For ease of reference the layout is compartmentalized into Strategy, Adventure, Sports, and Sims. In addition to reviews, each section has it's own regular columnist. Each of the writers are specialists in their own field, none of this giving the game to the nearest hack nonsense. Half the writers are based in Europe, the other half in the US. In addition to some interesting spellings, this provides quite a cultural collision. Strategy Plus does not have a rigid house style so writers are free to express themselves in the manner they choose. Like most European magazines advertising is subservient to text in Strategy Plus, so no `cont page 268' to get you to flick through the ads. Speaking of ads, these will be all American so you'll feel quite at home. Rather than drone on any longer I suggest you take a look at the table of contents for issues #12 and #13. If you like what you see then you can subscribe by calling 1 800 283 3542. There is a special introductory offer of 12 issues for $24 good until 1/92 (cheques as well as checks accepted). I've tried to keep this missive relatively hype free, though if you seek a more objective view then I understand Peter Szymonik will be reviewing the magazine on-line shortly. Somewhat sacrilegiously, I can only be reached on CompuServe (100016,2503) as GENie does not have a local access # in London Thanks for ploughing through this. Brian Walker Editor - Strategy Plus ====================== Until next time! Peter T. Szymonik
