Napoleonics - scales and rules - update

Spotlight Article Graphic

Norm Smith, in his Battlefields and Warriors blog, continues on his project of choosing one scale and a 'go to' set of rules for Napoleonics. In this post, he's comparing Valour & Fortitude (…feels like a slicker application of [Black Powder], which I like.), versus Shadow of the Eagles (…has a whiff of old school charm about it, which I also like.). And as to scale: "…I do wonder whether deciding on a scale will finally simply come down to a case of mind over heart or heart over mind!"

Six Strategy Videos for Falling Sky

The famous Gallic Wars was the make-or-break effort that defined the fortunes of Julius Caesar. If he could defeat the Germanic barbarians who lived in what we now call France, he could go back to Rome a conquering hero. If not, he would be a forgotten nobody. Six videos chronicle the strategies of the major Gallic forces at play, differentiating future Belgians, Burgundians, and Celts against the invading Romans. Can you repeat the desperate gambles that Caesar made to win an Empire? Or will Vercingetorix finally get his revenge?

Description:

Nevsky is a board wargame about the storied clash between Latin Teutonic and Orthodox Russian powers along the Baltic frontier of the mid-13th-Century. It is the first volume in GMT Games’ Levy & Campaign Series portraying military operations in a variety of pre-industrial conflicts. In Nevsky, players raise and equip their armies, then provision and maneuver them to ravage or conquer enemy territory or defeat enemy forces in battle. Feudal politics obligate an array of lords and vassals to serve on campaign—but only for limited periods. Players must keep an eye on the calendar and reward lords to keep their armies in the field. Nevsky is solitaire friendly or can add a rules option with screens that hide what the two players’ lords levy. A second option adds detail regarding vassal forces’ terms of service.

"...this touch is my favorite design choice as it wreaks of antiquity and the passage of time." Grant Kleinhenz, in The Players' Aid, considers the board for this GMT Games title in his ongoing survey of what he considers the best board designs. Check out the feature that he feels makes for an elegant tie of map and mechanics: "These highlights on the board make it clear that this is a game about supply and transportation as much as it is a game about sieges and pitched battles."

Nevsky: Teutons and Rus in Collision, 1240-1242 from GMT Games is a wargame about the age old struggle between Latin Teutonic and Orthodox Russian powers along the Baltic frontier of the mid-thirteenth century. The game is the first entry in a new series called the Levy & Campaign Series which focuses on pre-industrial age conflicts and, as you can see from the name of the series, requires players to focus on some of the logistics aspects of warfare including providing for the payment and feeding of your vassals and their troops as well as planning out the length of service of your hirelings. In this Action Point, The Players Aid takes a look at the Command Deck and how this simple mechanic sets the tone for the game.

"Storming the Fort should be a tidy affair…." Designer Volko Ruhnke walks us through how to storm a fortification in his GMT Games' Nevsky, Teutons and Rus in Collision, 1240-1242. Then again: "Hermann’s expected tidy capture of Izborsk has cost him his best warriors!"
