On wargames campaigns (after Polemarch)

Spotlight Article Graphic

"If one is to do this, it is quite useful to read Caesar to see the kinds of things he considered important when choosing if or when to give battle." Prufrock muses about the value of running campaigns for the ancients gaming he prefers. See why "It turned out I'd rather refight Zama for the tenth time than try to sustain interest in endless minor encounters between similarly equipped neighbours over local concerns."

Fast, simple, not expensive, little errata, but only reasonably fun. (War game Review)

In his review on BoardGameGeek, Brendan Whyte first turns a critical eye towards the components and rules and lists their shortcomings. Game play fares better: “…the game is fast and quite fun”. Whyte then goes into comprehensive details covering game mechanics and spares no criticism for the game opponent (AI). His discussion concerning solitaire board games vs solitaire computer games is very interesting.

Game: Operation Theseus: Gazala 1942

(o10034)

Publisher: VUCA Simulations
Game Type: Board
Designer(s): Dirk Blennemann
Search for this and related games with Noble Knight

Description:

Operation Theseus - Gazala 1942 is an operational level simulation of the Gazala battles of 1942, which took place during May and June 1942. The game is intended for two players but is also suitable for solitaire and team play. The goal for the Axis player is to hit the Allied forces hard and to seize specific victory locations, thereby opening the door to Egypt. The Allied player wants to prevent this from happening, thereby eliminating the Axis potential for further offensives. The game is played in a semi-interactive way and makes both players sit on the fence at all time. It uses the same core system as VUCA's earlier Crossing the Line.

Operation Theseus: Gazala 1942 - Campaign Report (4 videos)

Neil, in his Diagonal Move blog, presents this detailed session report of his first playing of the Campaign Game for Operation Theseus. He begins with a great summary of the opening situation and then moves on to a series of detailed discussions, each occurring after he completed several activations. Part 2 continues from Turn 2 and includes combat and movement examples. Parts 3 and 4 cover the last 2 turns played and conclusion. The game ends in a nonhistorical Axis defeat that Neil attributes to his inexperience with game mechanics while still finding the game to be enjoyable.
